Good morning bread friends!
Quick update: I am planning to take one Saturday off from baking this month. I wonβt be selling bread on Saturday, March 15th. So especially for anyone purchasing Bread Club for March, please note that your order is for 4 out of 5 Saturdays this month, and those are clear in the order.
Last week I got to visit both of my kidsβ classrooms and read to each class. I selected books with stories of various black Americans. My kids (especially Cyrus) really enjoy biographies, so it was natural to grab books of their bookshelves that told the stories of people.
The message that I shared to the classrooms about these people whose stories have made it into books, was that they were normal people. And with their regular lives, they embarked on a life of extraordinary creativity, courage, or determination. And thatβs how history is written. By the ordinary folks.
Oh! You know how it is normalized for adults to ask each other βwhat do you do?β as a default conversation?
It is extra fascinating to me when kids ask this sort of question. After I had finished reading the books, we did Q&A and one student asked me what I do for work.
I too remember being curious as a kid about what adults other than my parents and teachers do for work.
Before trying to explain what I do to earn money, I started by saying that my favorite job that I get to do is be a parent.
It was pretty incredible to see a smile emerge on Cyrusβ face, and then stretch from ear to ear on him when I said that to his class.
All that to say⦠being a parent is dope. And as I was reflecting this morning on how sweet it is, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for all the ways in which my particular experience of parenting is made easy by having good employment and stable housing.
That is why I decided to donate 100% of our profits this month to the YWCA of Madison.
I look forward to joining together this month to support YWCAβs mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.
Their supportive shelter diversion program, rapid rehousing programs, family shelter, and affordable housing program for women and children are undoubtably life changing for parents in our community.
Thanks for being awesome.
Cheers,
Mo
