National Pizza Month!!?
adjusting the baking process & acknowledging the land that I write to you from
I was at an in-person meeting for work recently and the meeting started with the facilitator acknowledging the historic caretakers of the land that we were meeting on. In addition to this being the first time meeting my otherwise virtual colleagues… as far as I can recall it was the first time that I was ever in any work setting where this land recognition occurred. It felt beautiful. I later researched the practice and found this video of Indigenous people sharing why they feel that it is important, right, and just.
On the heels of Indigenous People’s Day – I wish you good morning – as I write to you from the homelands of the Ho-chunk people.
In the spirit of Bread & Justice, I spent some time yesterday researching food justice and indigenous food sovereignty. Among lots of good research, I thought I’d share this video that the Smithsonian Museum put out this time last year. It is a short talk from food justice activist, economist, and environmentalist Winona LaDuke. With her being from a northern climate also, I learned a few things from her talk that I’m going to try to follow up on for next year’s gardening… especially related to corn growing.
Anyway, I hope you’re all doing fantastically well this morning. I’m excited to be on my second week of being back in the rhythm of baking bread for the community. Thankfully, I’m making progress on my effort to be disciplined about going to bed early enough to feel rested when I wake up at 4 am to start baking. I also have adjusted my process to save a few minutes during the baking of each batch of bread. When baking out of a home oven (which only fits 4 loaves at a time) an opportunity to shave 5 minutes from each batch adds up to a good amount of time saved. You can see that today’s loaves are turning out nicely. Oh… this is a good time to remind you that I’m currently accepting pre-orders for this Thursday’s bread loaves. As we raise funds this month for Centro Hispano, will you help us sell out of our loaves this week? That’d be wonderful.
Finally, did you know that October is #NationalPizzaMonth? For the past few years, I feel like I forget and then re-learn this amazingly fun fact. Now that you know that October is officially the best month of the year… do you have any plans for how you’ll celebrate National Pizza Month? I look forward to hearing from you about any pizza making that you do this month. Or if you have any pizza-related questions, I’m all ears. The only cooking process that I love talking about as much as bread making is pizza-making :)
Cheers,
Mo

Thanks for these videos. Winona LaDuke is inspiring. I only have a balcony for my garden, so I will be making careful choices of what to grow next year.
