Good morning bread friends!
4 years ago I started selling my sourdough bread to donate to the ACLU of Wisconsin & Black Voters Matter. As our country struggled through an intense year of racial unrest after several police killings, and the explosion of the COVID-19 pandemic, I recall desperately feeling the need for our country to have a new leadership.
Now, four years later weβre in the last month of another presidential election season. I really anticipated Iβd be raising money for something similar this October. I planned to start todayβs letter by reminding you that weβve got only 33 days left until Election Day.
But recently I can't stop thinking about our friends in Western North Carolina. They too are only 33 days until election day... but at the moment, many people in that area are on Day 7 of just trying to survive. After Hurricane Helene came through the area last week, the pictures of destruction coming out of these communities feels unthinkable.
Yesterday, I spent an hour on the phone with a close friend in North Carolina. While he's fortunately far enough from the devastation, the somber tone in his voice as he described the circumstances in the Asheville area was heartbreaking.
This month weβre donating 100% of our profits from Bread & Justice towards meeting the on-the-ground needs in Asheville, NC. There is a long list of organizations serving those in need right now in the area. One of the well-trusted grassroots organizations that my friend put on my radar is called BeLoved Asheville. This is where weβll be donating our profits through October. Weβre donating to them as they continue to work to provide food, water, diapers, personal hygiene products, and any short-term needs for survival.
If you want some bread, Iβd love for you to be a part of this monthβs donation.

I keep thinking about the parents sitting around with young kids.Β
No food.
No school.Β
No electricity.Β
No drinking water.Β
No telling if all your friends are safe.Β
No answers for how or when life will get βback to normalβ.
Today Iβm feeling immensely grateful for a peaceful morning with my family, and deeply appreciative of your continued support in making a difference where it's needed most.
Thank you for being part of this community that cares.
Cheers,

P.S. While the loss of life and the devastation of communities from this storm is heavy on my heart right nowβ¦ you can rest assured, I'll still have more to say about whatβs on the line with this election π³οΈ
