Good morning bread friends.

As I settle into this new routine of baking for you once a month, I'm excited to announce my next bread sale! You can order now, and pickup your sourdough bread on this Monday (February 20th).

A year ago, during Black History Month, I wrote a long post about James Zwerg. If you are new here, or don't recall the story of that Wisconsinite who was a remarkable ally during the civil rights movement, I'd encourage you to check out that post.

This week I was reading about Dr. Edward Crosby. He is often described as the Father of Black History Month. I admire his life of persistence, courage, and academic ingenuity. If you aren't familiar, I'd certainly encourage you to read about him this year too. ✊🏾

As you all have come to understand, Bread & Justice is a philanthropic enterprise where each month we donate 100% of our profits to a different nonprofit working to make the world more just. This month, as I reflected on organizations in this community that are squarely dedicated to racial justice Madison's YWCA stood out to me. So this month, 100% of our profits will be donated to the YWCA of Madison.

The YWCA focuses on eliminating racism and empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. YWCA Madison provides wrap-around services that partner with people as they move towards self-sufficiency. From the infant on Third Street to teens in Restorative Justice, to the displaced homemaker looking for employment, to our eldest resident, YWCA is supporting people throughout their lifetime. YWCA takes a holistic approach to help people by addressing the root causes of poverty such as homelessness, unemployment/underemployment, and racism.

This recent article does a good job highlighting how focussed on human progress the organization is, and how great of a leader their CEO, Vanessa McDowell is.

For those of you who might follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that my only predictable content on there are the stories that I post of our family's homemade pizzas on Friday. This family ritual has been going for years, and we genuinely cherish it.

I may have shared this before... but if you're curious, this sourdough pizza recipe is the one that has inspired my recipe for pizza dough for a few years now. Shout out to Chris Lem for sharing his recipe so succinctly on the Sourdough Podcast blog.

Similarly, if you're ever in a pinch and want to make pizza at the last minute, this is the recipe that I frequently refer people to in that situation. Hint: if you need an idea for dinner tonight... now you're covered 😉

Finally, thanks to all of you who bought bread in our last bake. Between all the bread that you all bought and the generous donations were made to Bread & Justice that month, together we were able to donate a total of $237 to the Jewish Federation of Madison.
